Why are ADP and ATP often described as the “energy battery” of the cell?

ATP contains three phosphates, and is a very unstable molecule. Basic chemistry tells us that when a bond is broken, energy is released. So when ATP is broken down into ADP (only two phosphates) it releases a lot of energy that the cells can use, hence the "energy battery" anology.
