The phosphate is a high energy bond meaning it is unstable (not strong). The release of this bond and subsequently the formation of a more stable bond releases a relatively large amount of energy. This reaction can be coupled to endothermic reactions (requiring energy) like polymerization of amino acids to make it an over all favorable reaction.
