Why is blood sugar levels controlled by the endocrine system?

I actually need to know why it is important that the endocrine system maintains blood sugar levels in the body. I have this huge final tomorrow and I keep getting confused. The sugar in the body is glucose, right? and its needed in the muscles to make ATP (energy)...right?
